State Librarian Kathleen Moeller-Peiffer on National Library Week

The Santa Fe New Mexican published a article by New Mexico’s State Librarian, Kathleen Moeller-Peiffer on the ‘dynamic transformations” happening in our libraries:

Libraries today are about more than just what they have — they are about what they do for library visitors and their communities. Beyond a place of quiet study, library visitors today find creative, engaging community centers and places of collaboration on new technologies, such as 3-D printers and media studios.

As part of the New Mexico Library Foundation’s statewide library assessment, there will be three “community conversations” taking place around the state. These are open to the public, and give people a chance to discuss what’s working, what’s not, and what improvements they’d like to see.

Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon at UNM Libraries

Wikipedia Edit-a-Thons are great programs for any library – though each participant needs a computer. Come by part of one at UNM on April 7th. You can RSVP here: http://goo.gl/forms/KJnxfHJr4c

When [science librarian] Laura Soito came to New Mexico from the University of California Davis, she began looking in Wikipedia to see what New Mexico people and places had pages. She noticed the lack of information available about the state and is now thinking about ways to remedy that.

On April 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., she will host an event that will teach people how to work with Wikipedia. The event will be in the classroom at [UNM’s] Centennial Library in L253.

“People can begin working in almost any area,” she said. “There is so much that should be added.”

Anyone can create a Wikipedia page, she said, but the information must be sourced and point back to some publication or book. It isn’t a place for opinion.

Anyone who has an interest in learning more about how Wikipedia works and how to help make knowledge more widely available is welcome.

In April the focus will be on New Mexico and what kind of information is lacking in Wikipedia. She plans to continue offering the event on the first Thursday of each month, and to talk about new possibilities every time.
